English Breakfast Project(Process)

English Breakfast
(Elegant frugality project)



This project was a collaboration work between me, Environment Design student and Myoung Yoon, Interactive digital media student. Both of us are international students who have just come to England for a few month and had no idea about English culture and breakfast...


We decided to
re-design a
conventional shape
of English Breakfast
under the theme
"Elegant frugality"


We believe that having good breakfast is necessary to everyone and frugality doesn't mean people can't have enjoyable experience on daily basis.


This is our project's story and process...



Stage 1
Learning from zero


1. Going to different places:
markets, streets, tube, stations.
Observing People+Breakfast

Information was not enough; need to know more in details about users’ opinion particularly English





2. Having real English breakfast





3. Survey



Survey 1.
Breakfast: What, When, Where, How? Most of users are interested in English breakfast so we decided to look into it closely










Survey 2. English breakfast: Create your own combination of English breakfast, What users normally have and what they want to have.













4. Find information and research more on internet

News, Packaging, English breakfast in many culture and places, molding, A meal on airplane.

Stage 2.
Clearer brief


1. Idea: Reshape the food
Finding case-study of foods, food products that’s shape has been manipulated: Japanese sushi, Chocolate , Chinese desert, Tapas, etc.
And what is the reason of using those forms.








2. Inspiration: Arts
Mondrian’s simplicity of using shapes and lines.






















3. Primary resource,
An interview with the chef










Finding out more about the process of cooking, technique and ingredients selection.






4. Finalizing the scope of work

Putting all information together.






Stage 3
Experiments



1. Food Shopping
Good quality but cheap ingredients.










2. Bread experiment
Finding out which material to use: the process was documented by filming














3. Material analysis: property of food

Cooking and measuring to se how much space each material need.
Things that its shape could be manipulate
Things that its shape couldn’t be manipulate
(Concerning about English people’s perception of food: how it could still be recognized as English breakfast and how people could be suggested how to use product by the product itself)







Stage 4.
Finalizing the design


Arranging composition, Making multi-choices, Making a final decision.
